UNBORN
a film by Sasha Marie Speer

Unborn is a poetic underwater odyssey through the unseen depths of motherhood—its yearning, its grief, its wonder. What happens when creation remains just out of reach? When life flickers and fades before it begins? Can a woman still find wholeness, hope, and meaning in the space between loss and becoming?
Told entirely beneath the surface, Unborn immerses the audience in a sensory world of sound and motion, guided by an original score and breathtaking visuals. Through fluid imagery, we are drawn into the heart of the protagonist as she drifts between the realms of reality and dream—of despair and surrender, longing and release.
Inspired by filmmaker Sasha Marie Speer’s own journey through years of infertility—of surgeries, uncertainty, and the ache of monthly disappointment—Unborn reflects the raw vulnerability of a woman searching for answers within her own body. It also honors shared stories of miscarriage, premature birth, and the quiet, collective resilience of women who carry both loss and love within them.
Ultimately, Unborn is a meditation on acceptance and connection—on finding peace in the mystery of life, and knowing that even in solitude, we are never truly alone.

Director Statement
This film is inspired by my personal experience of grief as I attempted to get pregnant, only to fall short month after month. Of finding a mass and needing surgery, not knowing if I would be able to conceive – ever. Feeling so vulnerable as I was poked and prodded by doctors and nurses searching for an answer. In finding strength through sharing my story with other women. In coming to a place of peace within myself that the end result will be what it is, and that’s ok. I am not alone.
